Library Resource Guides

I apologize for the delay in updating this site. Busy, busy, busy - as I am sure you all are.

If you haven't heard about these already, the library has developed new online resource guides for most subject areas.

All guides can be viewed from here: http://guides.boisestate.edu/

The specific guide for Communication can be viewed here: http://guides.boisestate.edu/communication

Please feel free to link to these for your classes. Let me know if you would like any changes to be made or if you would like me to create one for your specifc course.

Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2008

The U.S. Census Bureau has given us an early Christmas present... The Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2008!!! Hooray! Just what I have always wanted. Seriously, this is one of my favorite resources. It is the beginning point for almost any statistical question we get at the reference desk. I am sure you can find some value for your discipline within its pages. A good tip to this resource is to look for your topic in the index. Remember the index is referring you to table numbers not page numbers.

Press Release from Census Bureau (which has a little blurb about the demand for digital items) : http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/miscellaneous/011095.html

Direct access to Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2008: http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/

The library should be getting a print copy of this awesome book soon. So be on the look out.

Semester Finals and Projects

The semester is nearing an end and Boise State students are scrambling to study for finals and complete projects and papers. Please take a moment to remind your students that the Albertsons Library will be open 24 hours during Finals Week. Also let your students know it is okay to ask for help from a librarian at the reference desk. That is what we are there for. Feel free to have your students contact me directly if they need individual help.

As always, let me know how the Library can help support your students, or how I can help with your classes and research.

New Technology and Youth Aggression

I caught this online and thought I would share it with you...

A Center for Disease Control panel has written up its findings in the Journal of Adolescent Health concerning electronic aggression by youth. It is in the journal's December 2007 supplement and it is online for free (unfortunately other access to this title is not).

Check out the link here to access it: http://www.jahonline.org/issues

As they say:
"Although many different terms-such as cyberbullying, Internet harassment, and
Internet bullying-have been used to describe this type of violence, electronic aggression is the term that most accurately captures all types of violence that occur electronically. Like traditional forms of youth violence, electronic aggression is associated with emotional distress and conduct problems at school."
See the link below for more info on the topic of electronic aggression:
